Combat Knife Technique for the Performer with Braun McAsh – DEADLINE

September 24, 2024 @ 8:00 am

$30

Course Description

The knife is the most common bladed weapon an actor might be called on to use. One of the problems inherent in this prop is that many of the dangers encountered in the real world are also present in the presentation of knife combat in film or TV.

The main problem is distance. Swords have a built-in safety factor since their blades create a much more controllable distance, which can be maintained by arm positioning and footwork.

The knife lacks this aesthetic distance. As a result, control of distance and the target are even more crucial for performer safety, even when hard rubber blades are used. There is also the problem of filming such actions, as the proximity lends itself to ‘stacking,’ and hiding much of the action from the camera unless absurdly broad moves are used, which reduces the credibility of the action.

This workshop will teach you:

  1. The proper grip and footwork to use.
  2. Techniques designed specifically to unstack actors, which contribute to controlling the targets with precision, and the measure between the performers.

The use of the non-knife hand for blocking, deflecting and striking.
